I've done that drive both alone and with others (I'm female) and I've never had a problem. I lived in SMA for 10 years. The biggest piece of advice I'd give you is after you leave San Luis Potosi, watch super carefully for the turnoff to SMA. Perhaps there's a big sign there now, but it used to be that the sign was about the size of any street sign and you were zipping along at highway speed. Have a wonderful trip.

If your driving from the US you will need to get a permit to take your car into the country. You will also need to get permission from our auto insurance to make sure your insurance will cover you while you are there. ALSO you will need a certified letter from where you auto loan is through giving you permission to take the car our of the country.

The permit to take your into Mexico is around $350. And you get some of that back when you return to the border.

My best advice?

Use the autopistas ( or toll roads ) whenever possible. Worth every cent in time, and trouble. They are suppose to be safer as well.
