The books aren't available for free legally. But Wizards of the Coast (the company that now publishes D&D) has made the d20 system "open source." You can download it all for free here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35

You can download music, movies, books and programs from other users by using Limewire. I get lots of stuff from there that is out of print.
