I prefer Harleys but Victory bikes are pretty good quality. At least you'll be riding. Good luck, ride safe.

Polaris Victory Motorcycles are fantastic and really well crafted. They are fairly new on the market, available only since 1997 but the companies snow mobiles and ATV's have been around for a long time. Polaris is similar to Harley Davidson in the sense that the employees put their all into every bike that comes down the line and the dealers are in love with the product.
The Vegas 8 Ball and Hammer S are gorgeous. You will probably want to get custom pipes because they are too quiet stock.
Everyone and their mom has a Harley, to the point where it is just silly now. I think it is great you are looking at other options.

I've ridden a couple of them quite a bit and didn't have a horrible opinion of them but I see anything great about them. The one I rode the most was a Victory Vegas.

The resale value on Victorys (Victories?) is the worst. Couldn't give the damm thing away.

I prefer Harley Softails or the Yamaha Road Star over the Victory. Both of which are great bikes. My softail was a fantastic bike in every sense of the word. I later bought a Road Star and it was almost everything the Harley was but at about 1/3 of the price (I bought it used.)

If you really like the styling on the Victory, I'd get it. But if you aren't in love with it and might ever want to sell it, I'd get something else.

The first Victorys had a quality control problem and their styling was sort of odd...sort of a like it was desigend by a committee. Now, however, they have their act together and have some great looking bikes. I'm waiting for them to come out with a serious machine for long distance touring. I don't want another throw your bags over the rear fender but a serious bike along the lines of the Gold Wing or the Yamaha Royal Star Venture. I'd buy a Victory before I'd buy a Harley.

I bought a Victory Sport Cruiser in 4/06. I've wanted HD's for some time but the cost new was prohibitive, like a new car basically. The model I bought was a 2000 w/ 4k miles on it, garage kept. New they went for $16k-ish which is quite high but they deflated in book value rapidly dur to Polaris' newness to the mcycle market. The former owners had done mods; saddlebags, new pipes (w/chip for engine),sissy bar, windshield, and replacement seat. The pipes make this 1507cc engine loud and it purrs(loudly) @ 80mph.@ 70mph its doing 3k on the tach w/1500 rpm to go before redline. This stuff comes out to $1K+ new, the usual dealer ripoff.
As for performance,It is very nice for a 650#+ motorcycle. Don't expect Ninja wheelies and acceleration. For my 1st V-twin experience it was worth the money. After this the only HD I may buy is a Street Rod and that's if I win the lottery or maybe an Electra Glide if I ride the Vic enough. See The VMC.com. :)

They are a well made bike, but will not hold it's value as well as if you buy the new HD 2007.
