Does anyone not agree with the books Oprah selects? Every book I have read that she recommended … well, sucked to be honest. Ugh, "The Pilot's Wife" was the worst story ever! Anyone have similar experience?

Oprah prefers books about women being victimized and struggling through their trials to become something more. Unless you like that type of book, you should steer clear of her picks.

I believe she's read all of the picks, but not many others because she has a staff to read them for her. They follow a set criteria. Publishers can recommend all they want, but it's her staff that weeds out the best choices and gives her the finalist.

By the way, no book coming from a small publisher is ever considered. Since the small publisher cannot afford the huge printings an Oprah pick must get and they aren't able to give hundreds of free copies to the audience, it isn't practical for them to be considered.

Well, at last I've found someone else who thinks most of those books suck. You're right, "The Pilot's Wife" was 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.

I've learned that if the Oprah Seal is on a book that it's a 'highbrow' Harlequin novel. So I don't waste my time. Good call on this one...

I actually loved some of the books on Oprah's list, such as "We Were The Mulvaneys" by Joyce Carol Oates, "White Oleander" by Janet Fitch, "Fall On Your Knees" by Anne Marie McDonald, "Icy Sparks" by Gwyn Hyman Rubio, and "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver, but there were other books on her list that I hated, such as "Back Roads" by Tawni O'Dell, "Where The Heart Is" by Billie Letts, and "She's Come Undone," by Wally Lamb. Then there were ones that were all right but not excellent, such as "The Deep End Of The Ocean," by Jaqueline Mitchard, "Gap Creek" by Robert Morgan, and "A Map Of The World" by Jane Hamilton.

I haven't read anything just because it was on her list. I looked up summaries/descriptions of those books on her list and none of them really sounded good. I did buy Anna Karenina but haven't read it yet and it's a classic. It made me angry the cover had Oprah's Book Club printed on it because that's just embarassing. Do you think she even reads the books? Night by Elie Wiesel is a great book too, but I read that before Oprah was so popular. Let alone her "Book Club".

Oprey's book club was started to distance the show from the rest of the trash TV.
By starting the club, she hopes to convince viewers that her show is better than the rest of the junk on TV.
Don't fall for it.

Yes. She recommends them on expected broad appeal as represented by the publishers.

Instead find authors you have liked, look them up, and places like amazon will help you find others.

I haven't ever read anything she's recommend (that I know of). However, I'm very upset over "A Million Little Pieces." That isn't entirely her fault, but still.

I too hate her selections. They are all depressing and seem to only be about women who are victims of abuse.
