No, from what I have seen, on many occasions it can suck.
A little secret: For years I have kept hidden behind certain names and other people, but I can bet at least one in five of you has read something I have written somewhere, some time. If you like sports, scary stuff, or books similar to those of Robert Fulghum, we may have met before on the pages of a book, but you don't know it! :-) Those of you who have read his material understand the type of book of which I speak...
Anyway, I hide like I do for just one reason: anonymity. I have so many skeletons in my closet I can no longer shut the door, and choose to keep hidden so I can be human and keep throwing those skeletons in the closet without anyone knowing who put them there, or why...
I would choose freedom over fame any day. I have been a school teacher/baseball coach, mortician, and many other things, but have also helped others put words down on paper for a long, long time - mostly as a ghostwriter. I choose to get my jollies in that manner because I like my privacy. Why, you might ask? No autographs? No people asking me if I am working on another book? No fan worship? It's simply because I LIKE IT THIS WAY! :-)
A good example of why I feel the way I do: I had a famous friend who was killed not too far away from the not too famous location where I am currently residing. Well, his also famous wife and I decided to honor his memory by placing various decorations and flowers out at the point where he lost his life. Well....to make a long story short, people know who was killed there, and WE CAN'T EVEN KEEP A SIMPLE LITTLE MEMORIAL OUT THERE BECAUSE PEOPLE KEEP STEALING THE STUFF! SHAME ON WHOEVER THEY ARE!
Anyway, now that I have gotten that little rant off my chest and answered the question, as well, I feel better! I hope that gives you a little insight, and makes you appreciate what these people go through - many times when they don't want to. How many times have you been pulled over, only to read and hear about it in national headlines? Hopefully, not too often!
Of course, those who choose to pursue fame or have it thrown in their laps might have some of what happens coming to them, but not necessarily!

I can't really answer that because I am not famous. But here are my thoughts, anyway:
It would be a trade off - you would have to deal with lack of privacy; stalkers, the tabloids, etc. However, you would also be making quite a bit of money. You would be given preferential treatment in stores and restaurants. You would have the adoration of fans (double edged sword), and with that the power to influence people.
I'm 17, and I have to be honest, being famous does seem like it would make my life better. I would be making enough money that my dad wouldn't have to work all the time. I could pay off the mortgage and I could pay for college for my brother and I. I could donate money to charities, enough money to make a big difference. (Though I wonder if becoming famous would change my priorities..)
Realistically, it's not going to happen. I mean, I suppose I might like acting if I tried it, but I couldn't see it being my life. Aside from maybe writing, the things I really love doing and am considering as careers are not going to get me famous, at least not beyond a specific group of people. How many famous occupational therapists can you name? Or horseback riding instructors? Canine behaviorists, or service dog trainers? Exactly. I'm going to have to learn to be okay with that, and think about how great it is having privacy. :-P
To answer your question, though, I think you would have to talk to someone who is actually famous (and willing to let you in on how they really feel).

I don't know -- I have never been famous -- so I couldn't tell you from personal experiance. I think everything has a cost - even if you're just a waitress or work in an office. Everytihng comes with prices - and being famous comes with good things and bad. I think if you're doing something you love, then anything is worth it - if you hate what you do...it's not worth any amount of money.

I am sure its nice, but they have LOTS of issues
Lindsay lohan is an alcholic possibly bulimic... Paris Hilton had the sex tape scandle, then the cell phone, then someone stole her dog.... Nicole ritchie has a coke problem, and looks ill right now... Brittany Spears went from bubble gum pop princess to married twice hillbilly - to stripping ooopps I forgot my panties again... and its not that they have problems, it with everything they have, they usually get lost in it and forget who they are, and try to prove to all of us who they are not by recreating themselves time and time again... If you ask me, a lot of hollywood is morally deprived, and although being a millionair sounds great , what price do you pay to be there? Not to mention you can even leave your house with out 100 poperatzi following your every move just so they can snap a picture and get paid thousands for catching you eat a hoagie, tripping, or grocery shopping

First, you have to cut out nearly everything the media portrays it to be. You have to work very hard at it (and loving what you do helps). The real key is being prepared, and growing as a person with the pace at which your popularity and status grows.
To answer your question--no. Those who are near the top of that mountain now ignored all the b.s. to get there and focused on one thing.

I sure wouldn't want to be famous. It's hard enough to be recognized in the grocery store by customers of the company I work for - it would be a real booger to have everyone in the country know who I am!
