I know it's very unlikely that it will ever happen but what if it did. For instance, everyone just felt that the country was in too big of a mess and it was too much to handle, and no one wanted to step up to the plate and take control. Are there laws or ordinances in place just in case something like that ever did take place? I guess i'm basically trying to ask who would run the country in the absence of a President?

That will never happen because there are too many egomaniacs in the US, but what would happen is ...well... I don't know. sorry!

Very unlikely, indeed. There will always be somebody willing to take control. If the country was in too big of a mess for a democracy, some other form of government would arise, either from within or with help from outside forces.

That's hilarious, I never thought of that. I do think it's impossible, because if no one wanted to be president, I'd run uncontested and win. There will always be people that want to be president. Although in your suggestion, there is no fall-back plan for our country if no one wants to be president. I guess maybe the speaker of the house would be promoted to president?
