I have a subscription to a online movie club. Can I copy a dvd to a vhs tape using a combination dvd,vhs player-recorder? If so, is it legal as long as it is for my own personal, private use? Thanks

It's technically only legal if you own the DVD and only use the copy for personal use (as in, not for profit).
If you know anyone that has an older VCR, that might work as well; VCR's that pre-date the macrovision encryption usually just ignore the code and let the signal record normally. I used to have one many years ago that did that.

DVD's have macrovision encoding to prevent copying. If you try and copy the copy will be unwatchable. However, if you look around you will discover that there are sites that sell macrovision decoders.

As to the legalily, I would have to leave that part of the question to someone knowledgeable in that area.
