That's a bad example. Because if I go to the store, and I try on a pant and they did fit me, when I bring them home I assume they will still fit me. Unless of course, I gained a significant amount of weight since I tried them on. You always want to speak and write in the present tense; if you write in the past tense your writing seems as though it were dead. At least for me. It just seems that if I say, "the clothes did fit", one would assume that they don't fit anymore. If I say, "the clothes fit", one will assume they fit at the store and they fit now.

I agree with Ron P. 'Fit' is not a good example.

i guess its because as we grow and evolve so does our understanding of the language besides "fitted me" sounds like a 1st grader trying to speak.
