Not unless you have a court order to do so. You can legally change your name to anything but you have to have a court order.

It's easy to do but you have to pay for court costs and such. You can legally change your name to "Stinky Feet" if you wanted.

Once you have the order you just submit it to the SSN Department for a new card. Same as if you got married.

Why?
I think if you went back to your maiden name, or you remarried and changed it to your new husbands name and then got divorced, that you have to go back to your maiden name, if you don't want to keep the new ex's name because you are no longer legally your first ex's wife anymore. Unless you go to court to get it legally changed back. The SS dept will require some kind of official documentation to change your card.
