My bettas (whose last 4 meals have been blackworms & freeze dried bloodworms) have three of the twenty with long black lines trailing beneath them of what I believe is poo... what is causing this?

Is it dangerous?

What steps can I take to fix it?

Yep, most likely poo. The rich diet can cause that stringy, dark poo. Feed some flakes or pellets every other meal and the worms every other, that should take care of the problem.

You are on the right track though, the bigger variety of foods you feed the better as a general rule. Just be sure all the varieties are stuff the fish need. For bettas, blood worms, black worm, brine shrimp, fairy shrimp, mosquito larvae are all good choices, but keep up the flake food for some bulk in the diet.

I'm not sure what's wrong with your bettas but prepared worms should only be given as a supplement to the fishes regular diet (like once a week or something). Buy some flake food or special Betta food for their everyday meals.

If its poo, it'll look like its coming from under the chin. If this is the case the fish is constipated and needs to be fed less. the first answer is right, bloodworms are a weekly treat not a staple diet, its not balanced. If its from elsewhere on the fish, it could be damage or a parasite. the description is vague, its hard to help. also, healthy poop should be the colour of the food.
