Why does the year 1877 appear on buildings in the city of Gloversville New York?

Up to 1877 the population of Gloversville was around 4,000. At that time around 20 acres of land became available for development agreed by the Fulton County officials and building began in earnest with a huge population increase. Thus, due to the great number of buildings built in that year, and the custom of putting commemorative stones in the wall showing the year of construction, many buildings are adorned with the year 1877.
