No Onion and Garlic are vegetables only. The smell because -
When Onion garlic cells are ruptured by cutting or pressing, they release an enzyme called allinaise. This enzyme chemically changes the inherent alliin into allicin, a sulfur-containing molecule, resulting in that heady, pungent garlic smell which is a mainstay in kitchens around the world. These sulphur molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream and lungs, escaping through exhaled air and perspiration. Thus, the garlic breath. And, in some people who consume massive quantities, a noticeable garlicky bodily odor can result.
Both have very good medicinal values and you can take them freely-

The definition of vegetables = things that take nutrition from the ground (Have roots) and leaves. They also cannot speak :-) nor can they "move" like animals...
The most probable reason for them being considered non-vegetarian would be that certain communities do not allow them to be consumed along with non vegetarian stuff. However, these communities do not allow them to be consumed because they are considered to grow below ground and hence not to be eaten (as digging the ground - which is also considered "live" and hence painful to the ground!).

Onion and Garlic are pure Vegetarian stuff. The smell has nothing to do with animal kingdom but due to sulfur containing Organic compounds.A few Hindus who call themselves as "Vaishno" in North India ans "Suddha Saivam' in South India and Hindu (May be Buddhist and Jain also) Ascetics do not take them because of very strong odour.

Onion and garlic are plants, and that is all that is required to make them "vegetarian stuff". They are good for you too!
Their smell is the result of naturally made sulfur containing molecules inside the plant. The plants probably adapted to have that smell so that animals would not eat them. So what do we do? We eat them! (same case for hot peppers).

Onion and Garlic grow plants, they are both a sort of underground thing, like a bulb. That makes them vegetarian. You can eat them even if you are Vegan, but if you don't like the smell you don't have to.

Onion and garlic are vegetarian foods. They're roots. The reason some religions prohibit their consumption is because they believe that uprooting them will kill organisms dependent on the soil.

No. They are vegetarian. The smell comes from sulfur containing aromatic compounds.
