I bought a used computer running WinXP from my office -- problem is, I don't have the admin password and now I can't use it because I can't log in. The admin was an IT company that we're no longer doing business with, so getting the password from them is no longer possible.

I'm not doing anything illegal here -- I own this computer now. I've seen software advertise that can do this, but they all cost $50 or more, which is more than I paid for the computer.

Does anyone know of free software or other techniques I can use to get in, reset the admin password, and finally use this computer? Any help is much appreciated.

If you have the WIN XP disks the easiest (and cheapest) way is to just reinstall Windows. You say you got this from your office. I would want nothing more than to wipe out whatever crap is on this machine and start fresh anyways. There are password cracking tools out there but I would not waste a bunch of time when you can have squeeky clean install in about an hour!

You can create a boot disk (CD) with utilities to read the SAM file and change account passwords. There are several web sites that describe this and offer tools. See the link.

Possible issue: If the system does not boot from the CD, you will need to reset the boot options in the BIOS.

If you don't know anyone who can hack into your computer you may have to reformat the hard drive. Are you able to log in in safe mode? If you can't log in then you aren't able to use system restore to disable the administrative log in.

I'm sure there are some computer geniuses out there that can give better info but, these are my thoughts on the subject.

Good Luck.

Go to your start menu, go to Control Panel, click on user accounts, click on change an account, choose one that's in there, and when that comes up , click on choose a password, and anything else in there that will make you the computer administrator.
