What steps to take when a sublet goes bad?

I sublet an apartment; I paid the person I sublet from for Jan. rent, he did not pay said rent to the apartment. Apartment was under his name, and he was evicted. However, I still paid him for that month, what steps do I need to take to recover my $?

Civil suit agst him personal brought by you personally....file in small claims court....
