Bad and Good are measures of ETHICS. It is usually based on the biblical "Job" problem of why bad things happen to good people... Most religion and most philosophy is based on this fundamental problem, and most traditions of faith, systems of law, and creeds of conduct are derived from what is perceived by the tribe or masses or electorate or citizens as that which causes harm.
Face it, people are obsessed with problems. They can't stand for them to happen to them, but love rubbernecking when they happen to others. People are naturally coliseum gawkers...so they are simply defining what is worth while to gawk at and paw over. More or less this gawking is a reminder that they are not dead or dying and that their lives are not as bad as someone elses. In a way, good and bad are derived to provide comfort to those who can't figure out if they like life...and are sets of emotional stimuli.
Good and bad has nothing to do with overpopulation, people who say that are just not paying attention. Sure diseases wipe out people and groups. Yes, murder and rape and capital crime happens...but there is no purpose behind it other than the demons of those who commit crimes and the random inanity of a blighted land to the disease riddled. Trees get blights. Animals get blights to. There is no rhyme or reason to a blight. They just happen, and modern science is attempting to explain and isolate the occurrences to make sure we all survive...but sooner or later blights will mutate and take us all out. The whole nature of a blight is to kill. If a blight of orange trees exists for our survival, then so be it, but when that blight becomes avian flu and mad cow disease and ecoli outbreaks on all green foods...well, we are suddenly an endangered species.
So, do bad things happen... No!
Do dangerous things happen? Yes.

I feed my eight month old table foods when her daddy isn't looking (he's soooo by-the-book) If she doesn't want her baby food I give her her cup instead. Sometimes I only offer her solid once a day. She has been off the bottle and paci since 7 months. I really get criticized for that!! I sweep but don't mop the floor every day that she is crawling on. I put her in my bed when she wakes up in the night. I don't always change her diaper when she wakes in the night. I fed her some of my snowball at the park the other day. (we're not telling dad about that one either) I have let her taste ice cream. (or that) I even gave her a sip of my decaf tea the other day even though she's never even had juice. I lie to her doctor about where she sleeps and tell him she is on a perfect schedule. OMG, this was really fun! It really makes me feel better to see all these answers and realize I don't have to be a perfect mom for my kid to turn out ok. Thanks!!

Yes, there are really "bad things".
If you consider over population bad, then a world with no "bad things" would not include over population. We would control over population through "good" measures.
If you think things like the Holocaust are not bad and are needed for human survival; then I definitely wouldn't agree with you.

I agree. There has to be a balance between the two or there would be nothing at all. You can't have happiness without sadness. You can't have life without death. Sometimes its nice to think that you can have one without the other... But its just not possible in the long run. The positive and negative must cancel eachother out. Good question, hope my answer helps.

Well, one persons bad thing may be anothers good. Like for example, from the Christian bible, if your Christian, you think what Satan did ( tried to take over Heaven ? ) was bad, ( usually ), but if you are Satanist, you think what he did was smart, and exceptional considering he could've succeeded. Satan was good enough to try, and had the balls ( 'scuse the language ) to go against God as an entity. Although he failed, he tried and thats what counts. So... It all depends on your view of good and bad.

Since 'bad', like 'good' is entirely a subjective value judgement and varies from person to person and case to case, the answer to your question is clearly 'no', or 'it depends', or some variation of the idea that everything is essentially relative.

First let me say this, over population is a myth. And no, nothing is bad because it will always have both perceived good and bad results. Things and events just are. They are nothing more or less than what they are.

I would say that the bad things you're talking about might be essential, but that doesn't make them good. They still cause pain and suffering.
