My Japanese isn't fluent and I've applied to programs to Teach English in Japan but wasn't able to get in. So what other options are available for me where I can use my degree and learn more Japanese for a job. Moving to Japan usually requires a work visa and a lot of Japanese companies want you to live in Japan before they will hire you... ? Any ideas?

Hi Maar!

Nihongo wa omoshirokute tanoshii desu ne?

Recently I was offered a few translator/interpreter jobs by placing my resume at monster.com. There is a place on their resume builder where you can state any other languages you know. Also, if you do a search for translator/interpreter there, you can find lots of jobs available in America. There are alot that involve specializing in mechanics, medicine or legal vocabulary that relly pay well. Try www.top-us.com. This is an agency that find interpreters/translators to place all over the US and some will even fund for work in Japan! I have recieved some offers from them. Also try http://www.translatorscafe.com to look for translation work!

Hope this helps!

Hi: Most of the answers you got are about 4 years too late!
I could suggest the Government (foriegn service or CIA) or the UN? But I think you would have to be fluent, in either? The military might be a thought, ask to be stationed in Japan! Now if you had a degree and could speak Iraqi, they really have a need right away for those language skills! A Japanese Airline might be a thought? Import, Export companies, specializing in Japanese
products? What were your fellow Japanese language students
going to do, with their skills? Your instructors in College, teaching
you, might have a suggestion. Your University placement service? You must have some special interests, what were your favorite subjects in school? Look within, follow your interests, get into something you like, it is going to be a long employment life out there! Good Luck....

Have you considered working for the Embassy? Give that a shot. They are always in need of translators.

You could flip burgers and cry for higher minimum wages like everyone else with worthless Liberal degrees.
