Striking oil (which in its natural state is black) on your land is about as good financially for a person as striking gold.
This is why it was given that nick name back in the 1930's-40's.
This nick name was made popular again when the TV show The Beverly Hillbilly's started and included the name in its theme song.
To this day people still occasionally refer to this nick name and there you have it.

Because back in the day, just like with the gold rush, people where getting mega rich. They were finding oil everywhere and there were rushes on it just as there were back in the gold rush days. In them days it was in such mass supply you could get rich easily by finding it just as finding some gold would make you rich way back when.

Although the origins of the phrase is due to the fortunes made by those lucky enough to drill a successful well, the reason most people know the phrase is from the opening theme song from the "Beverly Hillbillies".
