I majored in English in college...surprisingly, there are quite a few things out there. You could:
1- become a copy editor for a newspaper or local magazine
2- become a field reporter
3- America always needs good teachers! (especially in English...there are tons of people on this forum who can't spell to save their miserable lives! LOL)
4- apply for a PR job - create press releases, write the text for brochures, etc.
5- if you are interested in politics, you could become a speech writer
6- become a grant writer for corporations or non-profits
I hope that helps!

I graduated from university with two degrees... a BA in English with a minor in Poetry and a BFA in Speech/Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations. I am now a firefighter. Who'da thunkit?
Don't be disheartened as an English major, coupled with the right electives can lead you just about anywhere as it will be your analytical skills that will get you ahead (pre-law, pre-med, management). Don't get stuck in the all you can do is write and teach as an English degree can help you no matter what you end up doing.
Even as a firefighter, my English degree (and PR degree) has helped me considerably.

Have you thought about teaching? It depends what level of education you have. If you have a degree you can do a post grad in it and if you like English you could teach this. If you don't have a degree you can teacher train as you are achieving you degree. You need to have a GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English at C grade and if you want to teach years 3 - 6 you need science too. Try this link for more info: http://www.teach.gov.uk

There is a website called "LIVE CAREER" where you can take a test to find out what areas are your strengths and weaknesses, where your interest lie. I tried it and it was more informative than I thought it would be. Try it you have nothing to lose.
