Would I be gaining anything interms of cost? WOuld this be too much work or too costly to consider? I like the gas for convenience but the cost is pretty high. Would I gain by installing a pellet stove?

If the fireplace was originally designed for wood and converted to gas then converting it to pellets wouldn't be too bad. You will need to check the chimney liner and make sure that there is no blockage or cracks. Do that first as having to install a new liner is a little pricey. If it was installed as a gas fireplace you will probably have to virtually rebuild it for pellets. Gas does not burn as hot, nor are the flames as high, plus, even if there are some cracks in the flue, the danger level isn't as high as it would be with pellets (get it fixed anyway).

I wished I would have known you might be looking for a pellet stove.

I was having a hard time finding pellets. the smell of smoke throughout the house the pain of cleaning out the stove and cost of having the flue cleaned each year. One day my feeder went wild and put a days worth of pellets on the fire. that came close to burning my house down.

Yep I would have sold you mine cheep.

I say stay with gas.
