Both are possible. One of my cats used to get chased by a dog in our neighborhood.
My other cat used to attack our dog. It can go either way. Depends on the personalities of the cat and dog.

Dogs think that it is great fun to chase cats, especially if the cat runs. They usually jump around harassing kitty in the hope that he will run because it is a quite amusing way to play. Kitty on the other hand is usually far less amused by these antics and will probably give dog a dose of claws to the nose. So I would say that cats attack dogs, being as they are much smaller and on the defensive. Some dogs are aggressive toward cats though. Interestingly dogs and cats that live together usually become great friends and cuddle together. They are both wonderful creatures and great companions!

Well both can happen, my dog is really wild so she bites my cat A LOT. But in many cases, the cat will hiss or put it's claw up at the dog and scare it away. But either one is common and most of the time, the dog will scare the cat or the cat will scare the dog, they won't be just calm and love eachother most of the time.

I have a 70 pound dog and a 7 pound cat. They actually like each other. The cat "face-marks" the dog all the time. They play a lot, and seem to communicate on some level. Alpha male dogs have some dominance issues, so if they are not getting along, it's best to keep them apart as much as possible.

sometimes it's both. i've seen dogs attack cats and i had a cat one time that would chase dogs out of our yard. it was pretty funny and the dogs sometimes would leave with their tails tucked and yiping the whole way.

Cats definitely attack dogs, although I had both as pets, and they got on famously!

generally it's dogs attacking cats, but I have had a really cranky cat that used to terrorize my schnauzer. She would jump on him and claw him and make this most awful yowling noise.
I have a boxer who chases and tries to kill cats now, we keep her in her fenced yard.
I also have a little kitten that will swat my Scottish terrier if she tries to steal his food.

It go's both ways. I know because I have a Shish Tzu who kept picking on a kitten. When she stopped and turned around the cat came after her. She was still a puppy when she did this and she learned her lesson.
