You sure can. Just pick it up every day for an hour or two, and you'll be getting the hang of it. One trick is to always keep it out so that you practice it every day - never put it in the case unless you are going somewhere. Don't watch TV or distract yourself when you practice, just focus on the bass. Try playing along to the radio if you have a good ear.
