don't watch "Rang de Basanti" - that is a foolish and dreamy situation.

It is not important for a country to be a superpower and I have always challenged this notion. What is more important is that the common man in the country should feel powerful. Take the example of Russia which has enough nuclear weapons to blow the world apart ten times and is still revered by the other superpowers and given its due importance in global affairs - but most Russian citizens live in appalling poverty - many Russian girls are working as prostitutes or sex slaves abroad - I don't think they would enjoy the superpower tag.

Same goes for China. It is poised to become the leading economy in the world very soon - but people there have NO POWER at all - everything from birth to death is decided by a Communist government - people are treated not like human beings but as pawns in the larger interests of the country - and did you know, Chinese citizens have Emigration restrictions - unlike India, where it is easier for you to travel to most countries in the world (if you have money of course) - but in China it is not the same.

India is not a perfect democracy at par with Western countries - we still have a long way to go before the average citizen feels empowered and that has to start with the abandonment of VIP culture in India - today's India has two class of citizens - the VIP's and the rest - we need class equality - and even wealth distribution - we need a system where a person who runs down an innocent pedestrian on a drunken spree in a car doesn't escape the Law just because he/she has political connections. India is free today, but Indians still live in a feudal mindset and that has to be addressed first, we need a society that is more individualistic.

Also, we need to gradually eliminate the differences that arise due to caste/language distinctions - but that is far from likely as of now. However, the good thing is we all are moving in the right direction at least.

It is wrong to say that India is already a superpower. The truth of the matter is that the United States is the only remaining superpower. The European Union with its increasing strength could make an argument as a potential combined superpower, but alone none of these countries can compare. As far is India is concerned two key points I think are: On the social side, definitely education; it needs improvement. On the economic side, Gross National Income is low. GNI per capita, which is income per year per person, is only 720 US dollars. Healthcare also needs improvement. Life expectancy is only 63 years.

In my opinion India is already a superpower. They are a nuclear power, have a large population and are technologically advanced. If that does not make them a superpower then what does? Militarily they may be slightly inferior to the US, China or Russia but not significantly so.

Let's face it, to become a super-power we got to embrace capitalism. Capitalism creates jobs, it creates wealth for millions of people and in turn increases government revenues so that they can spent it on the betterment of the common public.

But why? Look at past superpowers/empires they all imploded under the pressure and obsession of maintaining the myth of their superpower status. Rome, English Empire, Third Reich, USSR, ... Reality is world is interdependent, superpower status is a mindless idiotic pursuit.
