I see you have a number of answers here. One more- When a automatic transmission is filled to the proper level the rotating parts internally are not running in the oil. If you over fill it the rotating parts contact the oil and whip it up into a foam. As oil pressure is what operates the transmission it will loose that pressure because you can't compress foam, causing all kinds of problems. Just like trying to compress whipped egg whites.

YES! Automatic trans have a specific operating range; too little and it won't engage, too much...as stated by all here, you can blow out seals and do serious damage to your transmission. BE SURE to read the manufacture's suggestion for checking your fluid. Many auto trans require the car to be on a level surface with the engine running. Don't forget to check the correct scale (hot vs. cold) as stated previously.

Yes, it causes too much pressure and the seals blow out eventually.Did you check it when it was warm or cold,there's a difference read your fluid dipstick.

Yes,eventualy the seals will fail and start leaking,from too much pressure.

YES SYPHON OUT THE OIL IF ITS MORE THEN A 1/2 QT. OVER FULL IT WILL TAKE OUT YOU PUMP AND SEALS BRAD.
