Consistent isn't how I would describe it.
Good customer service will enhance most businesses.
There is a saying that a "happy customer will tell a friend, but an unhappy customer will tell the whole street."

Many businesses depend upon repeat business, and also word of mouth as a method of advertising.

Another accepted industry 'rule' is that 80% of new business comes from 20% of your existing customers. This is based on a chap called Perato who did some analysis and produced some interesting statistics. One of which is known as Perato's rule. That is that 80% of your business will come from 20% of your customers.
I have tried this 'rule' out in my own business and can confirm that as a rough guide it is pretty good. Some times I have had 90% of my business from about 10% of my customers and have used this as a warning that my business has become vulnerable or too centred in one area.
That also leads back to good customer service, it is hard to win customers but very easy to loose them.

Because people will pay a little extra for good customer service. Businesses that do not provide good customer service risk losing their customers to a business that will. Consistency builds trust. A business that doesn't instill trust within their customer base tends not to stay in business very long.

When surveyed, poor customer service was one of the main reasons for companies to stop trading with another company. Apparently it costs four times as much to find a new customer as it does to keep an existing customer happy.

If a customer should have a problem and you cant or will not solve it for them they will not come back and will tell their friends not to bother with you. Watchdog will also get to know you. Professional suicide.
