I have an old Laptop (5 Years) that the HD died and I just got a new Maxtor 300 GB external HD. I put in the Windows XP disc and ran it but when I selected the external HD it said it couldn't install it because the partition didn't have the correct rights and to contact the maker of the HD to resolve the issue. Has anyone else seen this error and how do I get rid of it so I can install XP?

The problem is with the BIOS on the laptop ... not the hard disk itself.

The external USB drive must exist as ( be chosen as) a bootable drive in the laptop's BIOS.

I also doubt that it is capable of recognizing a 300GB hard drive.
It must have a 48-bit LBA-compatible BIOS ... check for updates on the manufacturer's web site.
