Because this is a material world (sorry Madonna). If our youth do not long for the latest gadget or fashion the millionaires will go broke. Look at TV and you will see all the things that we are supposed to NEED in order to have a happy life. Too bad they can't package and sell love.

because greed and success help drive commerce. It's essential for a pure capitalist system to have people aspire to material gain, because their quest of it fuels desire for things, and money. This drives production of these things, which are made and sold by companies, who desparately want to appeal to youth by being hip and cool and trendy. And it just compounds and accelerates. That's why we need education by parents and schools and media as to what is truly important in life. Sorry about going on and on, but, you asked.

I wonder that, too. I think it's simply to perpetuate our Capitalistic society. People think money/success will make them happy. They HAVE to believe that, or else our society wouldn't function. People wouldn't care so much about going to work, or making tons of money so they can buy a big house and eight SUVs, if they realized money wouldn't make them happy.
If you don't need that stuff, then no biggie. Just don't buy into it. Do what makes you happy-- live a simply life-- and stop comparing yourself to other people. Nothing wrong with that.
