The Earth's magnetic field is the product of a dynamo effect caused by the rotation of the molten portion of the Earth's metallic core. The outer core consists of molten iron and nickel, which rotates slightly out of synch with the solid metal of the inner core. Dynamo theory states that a moving conductor in the presence of a magnetic field serves to regenerate the magnetic field. Thus, the Earth's magnetic field is constantly replenishing itself.

By comparison, Jupiter's magnetosphere is 10 times stronger than Earth's and 20,000 times as energetic, because Jupiter's core consists partly of liquid hydrogen, a superconductive form of hydrogen that can only exist at incredibly high pressures.

The magnetic field results from thermal convection within the earth's electrically conducting liquid iron core. The basic principle can be understood in terms of Maxwell's Equations and the Lorentz force (or Ohm's law). A conductor moving in a magnetic field creates an electrical current, and an electrical current creates a magnetic field. In certain situations when an energy source to drive the motion is present, feedback or "bootstrapping" occurs, and the current and magnetic fields amplify and then sustain each other despite Ohmic losses. The energy source in this case is heat released by natural radioactive decay of unstable isotopes in the core; metal expands when heated and becomes buoyant and rises.

One interesting feature of the bootstrapping is that the same flow pattern can sustain a magnetic field of either polarity. The earth's magnetic field occasionally flips north to south over geological times. I don't know what triggers the flip, though. I don't know if anyone knows.

DavidK93 is the closest. The problem with what he has been taught is that there cannot be a speed differential with one area of earth's interior and one adjoining it. The Resistance would cause one section to either speed up or slow down.

It is the spin of our planet that causes the magnetic poles to form. The force generating the magnetic lines is an increase of mass rotation as one moves from either pole toward the equator. This force of rotation forms the Coriolis Force, which force causes air masses and water to move in opposite directions in either hemisphere.

When these hemiforces meet at the equator, they are moving in opposite directions relative to each other, even though the total mass of the planet is moving in the same direction. The evidence of the hemiforces moving in opposite directions is found at the equator in the southern hemisphere. Vanguard I, many years ago, detected a mass rise in the southern region at the equator that was not present in the northern one. It is only a difference of 25 feet or so, but it is there. The reason for the rise in this area is that the hemiforce moves against the mass thus forcing it to rise. Like putting one's hand in a fast flowing stream and having the water build up on one side due to resistance.

When these forces meet at the plane of the equator, and are moving against one another, they generate an electrical field in the plasma area of our planet. Then, as always happens, magnetic fields form at right angles to the direction of electrical generation.

The core of the earth consists of molten metals like Iron and Nickel. The spinning of the earth causes these metals to swirl and this in turn results in a magnetic field to be generated

Basically something charged and in motion(earths big iron spinning core) creates an electromagnetic field. That about as basic as it gets. a particle with a charge creates an electric field, an electric field put into motion creates a magnetic field. This is a decent video, and shows the effect that the sun has on us, and how our electromagnetic field protects us.
