I think George W. is the worst, hypocritical and stubborn all rolled into one giant mess of a dumb-tarted man.

History is important. If you learn only from your own personal experiences, than you miss most of the learning gained by the human race. The best president was George W. If you are wondering, the W is for Washington!! Without Washington there be no USA for you to be asking this question about. The worst president, well the other George W still has two more years, so we don't know yet. But President Madison is certainly up there, declaring war on Britain, who promptly burned Washington DC to the ground. But who knows, the Bush legacy could still do us much more harm than Madison. History will tell.

Let's see... There have been all sorts of Presidents in our country. However, GW Bush is unique with his Big Lie technique, borrowed form the Nazis, when he's repeating an untruth (such as Saddam was harboring Al Qaeda) so many times that people somehow start believeing it. He's cynically exploiting the 9/11 tragedy, daily, for his political gain.
With the war he started agains Iraq, he now is ready to handle a huge strategic advantage to the dangerous fundamentalist regime of Iran, which before that was held in check by Saddam (who was a Sunni, while Iran is Shia). Iran is sure to dominate the region once we eventually re-deploy troops from Iraq.
So this war, started on wrong probably fabricated pretext, not only cost precious American lives and trillions of dollars that this country desperately need to stay humane and competeteive, it also serves our enemies in a direct, important and far-reaching manner.
GW Bush, as the Commander in Chief and what not, deserves full blame for the disaster he perpetrated against the American people and the people of Iraq. From sheer magnitude of it, he's by far the wrost Prez ever.
As for the best, I vote for Washington simply because he was the first and he established an important precedent for the nascent nation.

Each President has specific moments where they were the best (and the worst) ... however, from the top of my mind, I would rank the following as the best:
1 - Ronald Reagan - restored American's cofidence, won the Cold War
2 - George Washington - Father of the Country, keep us together in the beginning
3 - Abraham Lincoln - kept the union together when we were tearing ourselves apart
4 - Teddy Roosevelt - strengthening our national interior
5 - Andrew Jackson - for giving us a big block of cheese that would create a joke on The West Wing.
The Worst:
1 - Jimmy Carter - misplaying the problems with oil prices and inflation
2 - LBJ - unnecessarily escalating Vietnam without letting our forces win the battle
3 - Andrew Johnson - too much pride to successfully handle the radical republicans in the congress who wanted blood instead of unity after the civil war.

Thomas Jefferson was far and away the best president we had. He promoted liberty and grappled with the decision to make the Louisiana Purchase, a power he wasn't expressly granted by the Constitution but it was that purchase that allowed us to stake our claim on the Oregon Territory later.
The worst president is a tie between Abraham Lincoln and FDR. Abraham Lincoln in effect took away the states' right to secede and fought the costliest war in American history. And he didn't do it to free the slaves. He did it because he didn't think that the Confederate States of America should secede. He wrote, "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that."
FDR's administration was a turning point for America. Not only did he prolong the Great Depression with the New Deal, all those programs set America on to the socialist track it's currently on today. And Germany never attacked the US. Japan did. So why did FDR declare war on Germany and Italy? Because he was spoiling for a fight. We had been reading Japanese codes for a while when Pearl Harbor was hit. It was possible and indeed probable that FDR knew that Hawaii was going to get hit. Why were the aircraft carriers out of exercises?
James Loewen's excellent book "Lies My Teacher Told Me" is a must-read for any history fan, or anyone who was bored in American History class.

I would have to say nixon or Johnson as the worst president. As far as the best, That's hard to say since there have been quite a few really good presidents. I think 30 years from now, President Bush will be looked at in the top bracket of best presidents because he started the whole war on terror thing.

I would say that teddy w/ his progressive era set the tone for the government of today. We owe the end of monopolies to him and unions, and the food and drug act. He was really god at what he did.
FDR (w/ his new deal) helped shape a better america. He tried all he could to get us out of the depression. Thank god we got into WWII we helped save the jews and revived our economy.
JFK was a good president, he was a great visionary but his death didn't allow any of his proposals to go through. He did stand up for civil rights which gained him points. Lincoln, he did preserve the union so he gets lots of credit for that. Jefferson gave us parties so thanks to him we now have the system we have. Raegan has great accomplishments for a republican. Washington set the tone for what america is oday. we owe it all to him.
But Hoover n Bush are definately the worst. Hoover saw the great deression happen and just sat there and watche (hoovervilles) and bush with his lies and decieving of people. his outrageous do nothing proposals. I am sorry but I haven't seen him do anything for our country other than kill our boys and run up the deficit.
We really can't thank our presidents for the economy. Ever since wwII its been steadily growing. Capitalism just allows for this country to keep getting richer adn richer. What bush should do is propose a tax cut that will actualy help the poor and not his rich old friends. find a way to actually help iraq before it falls apart and shut up. he's already a lame duck.

Shelly, you're such an ignorant sl*t.
The best presidents were George Washington, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan.
GW - father of our country, without him there would be no USA.
Nixon - opened relations with China, ended the draft, got us out of viet nam.
RR - won the cold war, turned the country around after 4 disasterous years under peanut brain, got our hostages back from Iran, defeated communism.
The worse were F.D.Roosevelt, Jimmy "peanut brain" Carter, B.J. Clinton.
FDR - basically stole all the gold in america, made it illegal to own gold, replaced it with paper, dragged out the depression for years, got us into WW2 which happened after he had been president for 10 years, made big government what it is today.
Peanut brain - Iran hostage, the Shah of Iran was an american ally who wore a suit, let women go to school and work, but peanut brain didn't like him, the oil embargo, the opec oil cartel exists because of peanut brain, interest rates were over 18%, unemployment over 10%, inflation 10%, we now face a nuclear muslim enemy in Iran because of peanut, plus he gave away the panama canal and still today cozies up to terrorists and trashes Isreal. He's made anti-semitism fashionable.
Bill Jefferson "BJ" Clinton - allowed al quada attacks on america and did nothing, sold missle technology to China for a 10 million dollar campaign contribution over the objections of the state department, the defense department, this lead to India conducting a nuclear test, which lead to Pakistan conducting a nuclear test. China can hit the US with nukes because of BJ. He dodged the draft, lied under oath, stole millions in the white water scan.
For all of you that say W is the worse, answer these 4 questions:
1) Have we been attacked since 9/11?
2) Are taxes low?
3) Is unemployment high?
4) Are interest rates high?

Best in my lifetime is easy... Reagan. Ended the cold war, economy went through the roof, etc.
Worst is Carter. Others have given reason already. He was, and still is, ridiculous.
You people who bash Bush all the time are insane. He has made mistakes, and I am not his biggest fan. But our economy is doing great, and his policies are a BIG reason why we haven't been attacked in the last five years. Worst president EVER? Gimme a break. You people need to take some history classes. Or maybe put down your crack pipes.

Reagan was the best.
He ended price ceilings on gasoline, thus ending the gas lines.
He won the Cold War.
He cut tax rates which enabled the economy to grow with far less monetary stimulation, which in turn enabled Volcker to have his one-time rate hike cycle which ended double-digit inflation.
The economy has since continued to grow and absolute economic mobility has increased dramatically. My odds of catching the top 1% aren't much better but my odds of living the same lifestyle in ten years that the top 1% do today have increased dramatically.
I really don't understand how anyone who remembers the 1970s can disagree with any of this. The results really speak for themselves - it seems as debatable to me as which Patriots head coach was the best.
I don't understand the JFK votes - he gave a lot of great speeches but his other two accomplishments were standing up to the USSR with the Cuban missile crisis (which would be dwarfed by winning the Cold War itself, no?) and proposing supply-side tax cuts, which Reagan did on a larger scale.
I guess you could give JFK credit for saying on record that his tax cuts would INCREASE revenue, which they did....
