I have a friend that's border line obnoxious with his witty sometimes arrogant remarks. I think the key is not to joke about hurtful things that could be construed as a personal attack, for instance you could tell a pregnant woman she looks like she lost weight but not vice-verse, obviously you're joking:-) If someone lost something you could say ok, when was the last time you actually saw your clue? It's about wit and charm and making people laugh, know your limits by the way people respond.

Cocky sounds negative. I don't think you want to be cocky, it is practially the exact same as arrogant. What you want is to be CONFIDENT. This is something I believe you naturally either have or don't have in your personality...
You can try to exude confidence by the way you carry yourself, posture, manners, speak...most women find that very attractive but there is a thin line between that and arrogant. Make sure not to cross it.

In my opinon, cockyness is a light air of rightous arrogance that is playful and/or sarcastic in a non-offensive manner. Being arrogant is simply the state of showing off that one thinks he/she is better/smarter/thinner etc.. than everyone else.
An example for you:
Kevin walks into McDonalds and orders. His order comes up wrong, but he doesn't realize it until he gets out to the car and down the road. He drives back to complain and correct the problem.
A cocky Kevin might say :Excuse me, I ordered such-and-such, recieved this instead, and would like you to correct it, otherwise I would like to see a manager.
An arrogant Kevin might say: Hell-o... listen toots, I know that working at McDonald's is kindof hard for you, but could your really, I mean really, try to get my order right? It's not that difficult. I shouldn't even be wasting time in a place like this, but I am.... so could you at least make it worth my while for being here and fix this?
Do you see the difference? (Most) people like cockyness in certain situations. Only Paris Hilton likes arrogance.

don't cocky and arrogant mean the same thing??? anyways, i think what you mean is "how can one show confidence without coming off as a total prick?" the answer is --- do it quietly. don't boast or talk about how good you are. when it come times to perform--just get it done like you know you can--like the outcome was expected and it's no big deal.

Cocky and arrogant mean the same thing to me. Perhaps it's best to appear confident.
How do you appear confident? By being comfortable and calm, knowing what you're talking about (and letting people know you'll research it if they ask a question and you don't know the answer), by letting your actions speak louder than your words.

I think you are asking "how do I have a high self esteem without being egotistical?"
That's the $64,000 question. There are all kinds of self help books that tell you to think positive and be humble. I suppose it takes practice. Do your best and don't toot your own horn. Give you self positive affirmations say positive things to yourself just don't go saying it out loud in front of others. Then it seems rather comical like Stuart Smalley. But the fact is, your inner voice can be a real prick and you need to train it say productive, useful things. List all the things you can do. List your achievement to yourself until you have ownership and carry them around with you without having to remind yourself. Training, training, training.
