You're right when you say cowboy company, the best thing to do is complain to FENSA which are the regulatory body with no powers. Also complain to your local council who will investigate. British standards are all very well and good but these types of companies are just not interested. The final resort is the small claims court to get your money back so you can get a decent company in to rectify the faults or change the windows.

Sounds like you got a really bad lot there. You do not say what exactly you had done. If you had new frames and new glazing then there is real grounds for complaint. If just new glass then you still have grounds for complaint. Best be is to call in a competent window fitter and ask him if the faults can be put right. Get a quote then send a bill to the original fixer for the quoted amount for putting right his bad workmanship. Give him the opportunity to come and do the work himself. If he refuses tell him that you are taking legal steps to sue him and you have every expectation of winning the case.

British Standards relate to manufacturing. It sounds as though you are suffering from poor installation. It also seems likely that the installation does not comply with latest building regulations regarding to insulation and draught proofing. You can complain to trading standards and the building inspection department of your council. You could also take court action against the company as it seems your window and door installation is not fit for the purpose they were sold.

If what you payed for is not fit for the purpose, then you must deal with trading standards. You can take the company to the small claims court. This is a last resort but they may put the work right before it goes that far.
You are right not to name the company, don't slur their name before you are proved right, as it can affect the outcome of the court judgement.
Also you can employ an expert building assessor to make a report out to ascertain the work that is required to put this right!

you paid for proffessional installation you did not get, contact the trading standards (yellow pages or get number from local council) they have the power to shape up the company or close it down, also i would write to them requesting they finish the job properly and see a solicitor about taking them to small claims as you now need to pay someone to take these items out then another bill for taking away and disposal, then new items need to be purchased and reinstalled also distress and dampness getting on you floor coverings via ill fitted door, and extra costs of winter warming due to draughtiness etc

you need to find out if they are fensa registered!!!if so complain to them if they are not registered you are going to struggle getting it sorted as they are not allowed to fit them anymore if not registered.....and you will not even be able to sell your house without documentation i do a lot of repairs like this as a window fitter its very common for them never to come back when problems arise.ask your council to send a building inspector to assess it its about£60.00 but worth it as they will advise best course of action to shut cowboys down....good luck
