If you have a rabbit, hamster, guinea pig, or other similar small animal, please help me out. Did you get your pet from a pet store, animal shelter/rescue, friend/relative, breeder, or somewhere else? If you did not adopt from a shelter or rescue, why not?

I'm not trying to induce guilt, I'm just trying to find out why so few people adopt these animals from shelters and rescues.

Let me clarify: I am not looking for one of these animals. I want to know why people don't adopt these animals from shelters.

In my lifetime, I've had five rabbits. Two of them came from a pet store--they were given to me as "gift" pets.

I got one of my rabbits from a woman who was giving them away for free in front of our neighborhood Safeway. She had four little bunnies in a box--her bunny had babies and she couldn't keep them.

One rabbit I adopted from the humane society.

And another rabbit I found listed on craigslist...the family that owned her was planning to get rid of her because they got a new dog and were no longer interested in the bunny.

I am all for adopting bunnies from shelters...I will NEVER buy another pet from a pet shop when there are so many animals at shelters in need of homes. I really do believe that every animal that is bred takes away a home and a chance at life from a shelter animal.

I rescued my dwarf hamster from a local animal rescue center, and a adopted both my guinea pigs from a pet store. I didn't rescue them cause there where none to rescue in my local area at the time I got them. But I have rescued Guinea Pigs in the past and I don't know why others don't do the same.

My first mouse was purchased at a pet shop where they were sold mainly as feeder mice- after it passed away I purchased mice mostly from Petsmart.

Thinking about it now... if you're thinking of getting a rabbit or guinea pig you should at least check out a shelter. It's sad how many rabbits are turned in there.

We got our small animals from the pet store. As for our dogs and cats. They have all been pets someone didnt want. Our newest dog. Cute as can be. She was a pet to a boy friend -GIrl friend situation. When the break up happened no one wanted her. We heard about here through a family member and were happy to have her :)

I've had so many pets over the years I can confidentally say yes to all of the above. Bought some, been given some, rescued some, occasionally they just turn up in the garden.

I bought one of my ferrets at a pet store because that was pretty much the only way to get them where I lived. My other one was a rescue from when I lived in Germany because it's owner was deployed to Kuwait.
