Spacetime is the combining of 3 dimensional space with time to create four dimensions--this does make calculations easier, and yes, there must be space and time for light to get anywhere.

As for there being no such thing in the real world...Huh? That is silly. Of course there is space and time, and combined, spacetime, because if there wasn't, those calculations would be meaningless, which they are not.

Space-time is a mathematical construct put together by people to allow calculations to happen and accurately predict the real world. It's just a tool for science people. There is no such thing in the real world.
