From Sugar Land? Maybe an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half.
You can take 59 all the way to 45S, which has no tolls, but will add extra time to your trip (how much depends on time of day and day of the week).
Your best bet is to take the tollway. Go south until it hits 45S. There are two tolls, one on each side of Pearland. They are $1.25 each (a buck apiece if you have a tollway tag). So, figure five dollars in tolls if you have cash only. Be sure to have quarters! There are usually only one lane open making change per toll plaza, and both get busy during rush hours.
When you are on 45S, just keep going until you cross the causeway bridge. Try NOT to take the 61st street exit to the beach because, depending on time of year, that way is packed. Consult a map (or Mapquest, or Yahoo Maps) for the best way.

It's about 65 miles, takes just over an hour from Sugar Land under normal traffic conditions. Best route: Take 59 to the Sam Houston Tollway. Head south for about 21 miles, then merge onto I-45, which leads all the way to Galveston.

BTW Sugar Land (official spelling is two words) is not in Houston. Sugar Land is it's own independent city.
59 North to Beltway 8 turn right on Beltway 8. This is a toll-road you are going to need quarters. I don't know how many. Take like 5 dollars worth. Take Beltway 8 45 South. Turn right again. This highway end at the Gulf of Mexico and Galveston Beach. 1.5 to 2 hours total drive time.

if you are near hwy 59, take that north until you see the sign for 45 south (on the edge of downtown.) take 45 south until it ends in galveston! depending on where you live in sugar land, it should take you about an hour, perhaps a few minutes more if you are well into sugar land.

personally, i think that Texas SUCKS, especially to go on vacation to see the beach. Gaveston Beach SUCKS. Texas LOOKS LIKE A SWAMP! Texas is so HOT during the summer, it's ridiculous. If you want a real vacation where you can see better beaches, be under the tropical sun, real island vibes, good food, relaxing scenery then you should go to HAWAII (specifically Maui or Kauai). do NOT waste your money on Texas. Visit Hawaii & you will have the most beautiful, unforgettable experience. You will come home bragging to friends how awesome the beaches are here in Hawaii.
