I'll play the devil's advocate for a moment. . . . Let's leave next week, or next month.. . . . . Do ya think Iraq will make it ? Magic will occur, and they'll be able to hold back Iranian insurgents, and Iran itself ?
If you don't think they'll make it. . . . . .then you can't be for withdrawal . You can't have it both ways, although so many of you think you can . We leave now, and chaos ensues.. . .. and that CHAOS will most certainly FOLLOW US HOME . Well, that's my opinion. .. . . What's yours ? And please ANSWER the question posted, especially if you're gonna rant AFTERWARDS .

If you listen to people who have been to Iraq and are familiar with what is going on there, you will find that most of them think the situation is so dire that it is EXTREMELY unlikely that there will be any outcome other than a full-blown civil war.
Even Henry Kissinger now says victory is impossible.
So the real question is how much longer will we stay there, wasting blood and treasure (1.2 trillion dollars and counting) before we pull out.
It is going to be chaos when we pull out, whether we do it now, or in three years under a different President. Bush and the GOP lead this country on a dead end path to hell when they launched their lie-based war against Iraq. It was unwinnable from the beginning.
The notion that we are somehow safer here because our troops are over there is just ridiculous and makes no sense whatsoever.
How is the chaos going to "follow us home". If we spent our money and resources on protecting our homeland and improving diplomatic relations we would be much safer than we are today.

i'm not sure how you can say that, living in the nation with the largest and most powerful military forces in the world. how do other nations' rich "con" everyone else to do their dirty work? it's like you haven't been around for the past year or so. we're winning in Iraq. we are so close to finishing, setting up a stable and strong democratic government, with all the people, Shi'a and Sunni, working together. we can see that starting to happen. now it's time to finish. and ask anybody who served. you have people from all groups of society serving together. rich, poor, black, white, Yankees fan and Red Sox fans. the quite obvious reason why there's less rich serving is because not everybody is rich. there are WAY more poor in this country than there are rich.

Isn't chaos already ensuing over there? And by staying longer, aren't we just making Iraqis dislike us more by the day? For Iraq to be stable, the people have to want to be stable and work together. Right now, they want to get revenge against each other for decades of injustice and we're just caught in the middle.
Maybe the answer is then Iraq shouldn't be one unified state because the only way it can survive as one (since no group in the country like each other very much) is to have a dictator forcing them to get along.

I know that if there were a vote for worst answer, this would be it but sometimes the truth hurts....
We need to stay for at least one generation after we stabilize the country. That's the only way to ensure there will be no more killing.
The US has given a lot to the people of Iraq. The American people have shown over and over again that they care through personal donations and the blood and sweat of her sons and daughters. It would be foolish not to see this to full success. We are on the verge of getting it right. It's still as far as 10 years away. First thing that has to change is the culture of revenge. To keep this country from collapsing on itself, we have to almost breed that out of them.
It can work, we just have to be as patient as them.

Who cares if it survives? Really.
It will probably split into 3 different states.
I mean, countries of the word have been splitting up over ethnic lines ever since the fall of the Austrio-Hungary and Ottoman Empires. Once they are free of autocratic rule and get democracy, people inevitably decide they want to be with their own kind.
Happened after WWI, happened after the fall of the USSR, happened in Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia. It's happening all over Africa. Canada has its French/Anglo problems but they aren't that bad right now.
It will happen in Iraq. And that's not necessarily bad.
PS look at how people get so upset at the growing Hispanic population in the US.

It will definitely survive. That doesn't say much about who will control it. Best case scenario is regardless of who controls Iraq or what kind of government they setup that the killing will stop and they will like the US. Worst case is the killing doesn't stop and / or whatever government takes over hates us.
If we have the option of overseeing that process, I think we'd be fools to turn our backs on it. Imagine if in WW2 after we defeated Japan if we did nothing to rebuild their nation?
