Don't be afraid.
I went through this about 10 years ago. Fibroid tumors are very common and many times they are left in place. If your doctor is recommending they come out it's probably because they are growing, so you can't leave them in there.
You'll be knocked out when it it happens, and you'll get some lovely drugs afterward so pain management is really simple. You'll be down for a few weeks after, so be sure you've got good books, or even better, digital cable with all the movie channels and be sure you have a network of family and friends to help with little stuff like store runs, etc. when you need it.
I spent the two weeks before the surgery cleaning my house top to bottom, removing stuff I didn't want to have to dust or deal with for a couple of months, stocking the house with nonperishable foods and all the sundries I would need so I would need as little as possible from the store. I also had to get all my animal stuff and garden ready for me to be 'down' for a few weeks.
After the surgery I had a friend spend the night the first night, but was on my own after that (I'm very independant and prefer to do everything myself). I had friends who checked in with me by phone every day and my mom brought me groceries or anything I needed once or twice a week.
You'll be very tired and weak after, so set up your place for you to be an invalid and don't expect to do much but lay around and rest for a while.
Think about how lovely it will be to come home and throw away all your feminine hygine products and all the 'ugly' underwear you save for when you menstruate! You'll never have a period again and won't have to worry about being pregnant!
A final note, two other women at my office had hysterectomies for different reasons than fibroid tumors within three months of me having mine. We were all fine, back to work in a few weeks. We even joked for a long time after that a hystorecotomy was a job requirement with that employer.
Don't be afraid, it will be fine.

There are many different kinds of hystorectomies, sometimes they take the cervix, sometimes the ovaries. If you are young they will probably want to leave your ovaries (like they did with me) because you can still use the hormones. I noticed after I posted this that lots of folks above me were wigging out about second opnions and saying not to get the hystorectomy. If you want second and third opinions, by all means, go for it. Fibroids are very very common, and like I said above, are often left in place, but there are conditions under which they do need to be taken out. I can tell you from experience that it will be fine.

How old are you and do you already have children? Regardless I would get a second and third opinion. Well you still did not answer if you had children or not. Anyway, if your fibroids are not causing you to have any discomfort or they are not bleeding then there is no need to have a hysterectomy. As one of the responses indicate they are other options. ther is the Cauterization or Embolization, where they cut off the blood supply to the fibroid, another treatment is to freeze the fibroid (don't remember the actual word) where it causes the fibroid to break away. Fibroids are hormone derived so there are medications that can cause your body to go through menopause, thus decreasing the amount of hormones the fibroid needs to grow, hence causing the fibroid to decrease in size allowing your doc to then removing safely. All these options, and there may be more, you need to discuss with your doctor to find your best option.

How old are you??? Surely there is an alternative to a hysterectomy. You should get a 2nd opinion. Fibroids can be removed, my friend had one the size of a cantalope and she still has all her reproductive organs. Edit: Okay, I understand now. My friend is 47 and had a partial for the same reason. I think she was only in the hospital a day, and was back to her usual self within 4-6 weeks.

DO NOT LET THEM DO A HYSTERECTOMY!!!! That is a Doctors suggestion every time and it's not necessary but apparently more money in their pocket. A hysterectomy is major surgery and I was appalled by how easy they suggested it. Plus, it will put you out of work for at least 2 months!

I am an african american female and do you know that 50% of us have fibroids? I was diagnosed with them when I was about 37. Heavy periods made me incredibly anemic. I talked to 2 Dr's and the first thing out of their mouth was hysterectomy!

I agonized over this for 3 months and in the meantime had horrible periods and the cramps were unreal. I was even told that my uterus was the size of a cantaloupe. My sister had told me about Embulization. It's a procedure where they go in your tight and seal and artery that supplies the fibroids with blood causing them to shrink.

It took about 6 months to take effect but let me tell you. I had this done about 3 years ago and my life has been back to normal. I have fibroid tumors and I have had them for over 3 years. Do not get a hysterectomy unless it is absolutely medically necessary. There are other procedures that you can do to try to shrink them. The main thing you need to do is change your diet. Avoid all dairy foods, meats fried foods and other processed foods all together. Basically try switching over to a veggie diet. I have done this and it has helped me out a lot.
There are also other medical procedures that the doctor can perform other than hysterectomy's. I forget what its called but basically its something where they insert something into the uterus to cut the blood supply off to the fibroid and this causes it to shrink.
Good luck to you and please don't get a hysterectomy until looking into other options.

I had a fibroid tumor removed at 49 years of age, never did they suggest a hysterectomy. I would expect it depends on how many you have and age, it will put you into menapause. If you do choose to have the hysterectomy, it's really a piece of cake today, I had a friend that had one, she was up and at it in a few days and felt great. You will be fine, don't be afraid.

Get another opinion. Hysterectomy is not the only answer.
