Illegitimate means that the child was born without the parents being married. I don't agree with that though, why should an innocent child be put in a certain class because of this? I think they should be illegitimate parents.

It means not legitimate. Not valid. Not able to be considered the real deal. Like for instance, when they used to say a child was illegitimate they would mean the child was not considered a real and valid heir like a child of marriage would be. It was an awful way to look at people, but you know how old folks thought . I am just a kid so I can say that! Hope this helps.

Elizabeth (heir apparent) was declared illegitimate after the execution of her mother Anne Boleyn for treason (amongst other things). basically it is a child born out of wedlock - bumping off the mother and declaring her illegitimate it Gave Henry the opportunity to marry again, and get a son (eventually to Jane Seymour)

If you are using the word with a person, it means that their parents were not married when the person was born. Webster has it as: not recognized as lawful offspring; specifically : born of parents not married to each other
This person would carry their mother's maiden name instead of their father's last name.
If it is regarding a practice or thing, it is something that is not sanctioned by law : ILLEGAL b : not authorized by good usage.
