Stories originate because man has an imagination and seeks to explain what he experiences. As ghost stories go way back, they probably started as a means to explain various events that had nothing to do with ghosts i.e. blue fire on sails or in swamps, things apparently missing for no reason... etc.

Currently most, if not all, ghost stories have been totatly debunked by proof of other causes.

There is no simple explantation, but I'll try. There many ghost stories from all over the world. For a long time, tales of supernatural beings were used to explain the unknown, death being one of them.

The belief that a person's spirit can live on after death is universal in many cultures. The Lipan Apaches were very afraid of the spirits of the dead; the dead would be buried along with his/her possession. The burial site would be avoided and no one was allowed to mention his/her name again, even among relatives. In China, ghosts are said to appear where there was a murder. Generally speaking, those who died in great anger, grief, or regret have their spirits remain on Earth; usually taking their anger on the living but their are rare stories of benevolent ghosts. Places where there was lots of death and acts of great wickedness are said to be haunted. New Orleans is infamous for the alleged haunted places and dark tales.

Ghost stories are also sources of entertainment or lessons. In Mexico, adults tell children the story of the "Weeping Woman" to keep them from wandering in the river (so they won't drown). There are variations of the story all over Latin America. In Japan, there was a game where everyone in a candle-lighted room would take turns telling ghost stories and blow out the candles after each story. This game was started by the samurai as a test for bravery.

I think it all comes down to the power of belief for sensory perception can be decieving. A pharmacist at a hospital I used to intern at stayed at an alleged haunted house and found nothing. A friend of mine does not believe in ghosts, but rather demons who lurk in places where wicked deeds were done. There is much in the world we don't know about. Whether you believe in these tales is up to you.

When people see a guardian angel or someone from the other side they assume ghost! Its scary and strange so they think its bad and its there to hurt them which in turn they called them ghosts. When usually these are just people on the other side which can actually get mean Ex. opening cabinets and doors, making noises and such to scare you. Most likely they have not fully crossed over. Demons are different. Demons will come if they are waiting for you to die. I know a couple people who have actually seen them right beside there faces and were so scared they couldnt move. Something you dont want to experience.

Amazing the responses you've gotten here - especially the ones that claim "The bible says" without actually citing which book, chapter and verse support their claim. I've read through the entire bible numerous times and have yet to find either of these citations.

Without the benefit of microscopes, modern scientific methods and other tools, primitive man tried to explain the world around him. In doing so, he found many things that were beyond his ability (given his limited tools) to explain, and so attributed these things to "ghosts", "Spirits", "God"(s), and the like.

There are some who continue to believe outdated theories based in ignorance.

No one can prove for sure if ghosts are real or not, but there are stories about them because it can trigger excitement, and they are fun to hear about overall. Stories can originate from personal experience, or just plain myths.

We also have stories about talking animals. Those stories originated in the imagination of people. I don't think that, the existence of the stories notwithstanding, I'm likely to meet any talking animals.

People always tell stories. They are often about unreal things.

why do we have stories about the tooth fairy?

ghosts are not real, in no way shape or form do ghosts haunt the earth. their appearance has never been documented and to believe in them is utter nonsense.

believing in God and the spirit is something entirely different.

HI
I don't believe ghosts are real cause the bible says when we die our thoughts do perish but I believe they are the bad angels like demons who pretend to be dead people to torment the living and that is where the stories come from.
