Hyper means Above or beyond, so hyperspace means a space that is beyond normal space.
Hyperspace as a word has a couple of meanings. It is used to refer to Minkowski spacetime, and was meant to refer to things that were paranormal back in like the 18th century (not widely used then, but still), but mostly it refers to anything that is outside of the 3 dimensions of normal space.
In science fiction it is used as a plot device to get characters from point a to point b in space without having to wait thousands of years. Though this defies our current understanding of physics, that doesn't mean that it's completely ridiculous, just highly unlikely.
People who automatically say things are impossible are the first ones to jump on the bandwagon when somebody who had an open mind figures out how to do the impossible.
Hyperspace is a made up word, but it is in the dictionary, with a real definition, with all the other words that humans made up.

Hyperspace is a made up "Star Trek" word and means nothing scientifically. Taken in the Sci-Fi sense, it means really fast or light speed. It means whatever you want.

it's a sci-fi term used to define some mystical set of dimesions that allow one to jump around the universe and disobey the laws of physics. It's kind of a secret passage way through space.
