Most of the time he avgs. 91/2 hours of sleep a night. If I let him he would sleep 13 and more. My concern also is that even with plenty of sleep, he often falls asleep in his afternoon math class.
I have considered that its boring him to sleep.
Also though he cannot stay awake in the car, and a lot of times he just gets this vacant stare. Any ideas?

No TV (we don't watch a lot of it).
He is overweight (his mother let him have anything he wanted when he lived with her.) We just got custody of him a couple of months ago.
He is growing quite a bit... and he talks in his sleep a lot and thrashes around.

No weed, no downers. He's a clean kid although there is cigarette smoking at his mom's house so it could be an oxygen deprivation thing. But he's only there every other weekend.

Does he have a TV in his room? If so take it out. Studies indicate that having a TV in a room interrupts sleep, so although he might be not getting out of bed for 13 hours he might not be getting more than a few hours of sleep. If that is not the case, take him to his doctor and have him tested for Diabetes. This can cause extreme fatigue. Before I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes I had to take a nap after only working a 4 hour shift. I read what you added and I would have his doctor check him for Sleep Apnea and diabetes. Sleep Apnea is worse in people that are overweight. My husband had a horrible time with it until he had Gastric bypass surgert. He kept waking himself up because he couldn't breath properly, so he was always tired.

Does he eat frequently, this would cause him to be lethargic, or is it possible he is on some type of downer. I would either take him to a doctor or at least consult a doctor to get some professional advice. When my son was 13 I couldn't get him to slow down, he may have something physically wrong with him, or he may be going through one major growth spurt and needs all that sleep because he is growing.

Scientists now say that a teen needs as much sleep as a new born does because of all the hormones in their bodies. All the growing they are doing makes them need more sleep than it was previously thought. Also you might see if he is smoking weed as it can cause that vacant stare and make someone pretty sleepy!!

see if he's having a really restful sleep at nite, with no distractions, doesn't have a snoring problem..visit a doctor for a routine health check up..that will rule out many causes..he might be having, narcolepsy(excessive sleep disorder) or simply strained eye muscles...whatever it is, see a doctor, n don't worry too much..it's common for children..but, daytime sleep attacks like in class should occur only if u r sleep deprived..so, do go 2 a gud doc.

Teenagers do this. They are growing. Their bodies are using incredible amounts of energy. I remember that I would have slept for days if possible. In general, it's completely normal. However, it could also be a sign of a problem. It wouldn't hurt to get some blood work done just to check, but really he's just growing.
