The Crowne Plaza in Dam Square is really well located and when I stayed there was v good value for money - its either 4 or 5 star. Stayed there when I went over with a couple of friends for my 30th and we actually used their website to book - believe it or not does sometimes work out cheaper than using a cheap hotel booking site.

if you are incredibly lucky and can get a reservation, Maes BnB is better than most amsterdam hotels.

For a city that gets so many tourists, it has some pretty rubbish hotels.

We stayed at Doelen Hotel and were really satisfied. Wondeful situation, nice room and huge and varied breakfast; by the way, breakfast was served in a room facing one of the canals: just beautiful.

Tripadvisor.com is good for reviews of hotels.

Bookings.nl is not a bad site to book them from.

BTW, I stayed at Eden Rembrandt, a couple of months ago. Definately a four star hotel and location was great.

Ahhh Hamsterdam... I remember a trip there once and I stayed in a surreal wee guest house called Get Lucky. Rickety ole place but a free spliff in every room :-)

Try Octopus Travel (www.octopustravel.net I think), I have used them loads for lots of trips.
