You can't compress the songs. You can use iTunes to set up playlists with different songs in each playlist. Then you can swap them out and get different songs onto your iPod.

Or you could trade up to a larger iPod. I have a 30GB iPod with about 1400 songs and 8 movies on it and it's may 1/3 full. Of course, it's more expensive than yours, but you get what you pay for.

the 1gb ipod is supposed to hold approx. 250 songs, but I think that really depends on the length of the songs. Also, you don't get to use the entire 1gb for music, there has to be room for the library and playlist files.

You could just put some of your playlists on your iPod. That's what I did.
