The cost of staying there is cheap if you're on vacation. You can get updated by checking the currency exchange before going there. Food and lodging will always be cheaper comparatively. If you opt for the five star luxury places, then it's going to be expensive. Most countries would like to cater to the big spenders so they build these places to cater to them. But, you can always find cool and cheap and not at all shabby.

The cost of flying there, though, from the US is so expensive.

Certainly not expensive like many western countries - but westerners are often charged what the seller thinks they can charge, not what the service or product actually costs. It doesn't help having fat Americans throwing money around, and thus inflating the prices for everybody else.

The cheapest prices are AWAY from the tourist areas. The sellers in this area tend to be less experienced with tourists and foreigners and are more likely to charge the real cost instead of the dumb foreigner cost.

The cost is definitely rising everywhere. The people have learnt that foreigners are generally stupid and think everything is cheap regardless of how much they pay. Had a friend who was a fruit seller - she would charge around eight times the local price to some foreigners, but hey, she deserved it and they could afford it. It's all relative to your income after all. I've seen tourists buying up stuff in Bangkok that I can buy cheaper in the UK and they keep telling me what bargains they had. Some stuff is still cheap but if you've not visited in a while I reckon you'd be surprised by the price increases in a lot of places.

Surprisingly, with the introduction of low cost flights in SEA, cost of travelling is cheap. A flight from Singapore to Hanoi for USD29.99!!!! Do use Tigerair and Airasia. And do book ahead for the cheaper flights.

But, I am afraid that with the lowering of the USD, the Thai Baht has risen considerably. Vietnam and Cambodia...you can survive on USD20 a day inclusive of a backpacker's acco.

depends on the amenities that you are looking. because of the asian financial crisis, a lot of asian currencies devalued their worth such that travel ling to asia became very cheap. i would say the philippines would be the most affordable vis-a-vis facilities.
