The figure 8 shape on your globe is called an analemma. This tracks the perceived path of the sun across our Earth's sky throughout the seasons of the year. Of course the sun does not move across our sky, but from how we see it on Earth, the sun follows this figure 8 path. Much more detail on this can be found here: http://www.analemma.com/

That's a good question. It shows the inclination of the earth at different times of the year but an "Inclinometer" is that device used on vehicles (like 4 wheel drives) to show how much it is leaning, so that isn't the proper name.

Hope you find out... I've always wondered what that figure 8 figure is actually called, even though I know what it's used for.

How about looking up a globe manufacturer on the web and sending them an e'mail?

An ANALEMMA is what its called and i do know what it does!!

The Earth Wobbles as it goes around the sun. that causes the seasons which we all know. but this wobble causes the sun not to be at the same point in the sky. so the figure 8 tracks the position of the sun through out the year!

hope this is a help

analemma - if you were to measure the position of the sun every day (at the same exact time) it would make this figure 8 pattern over the course of the year.
