If you are using XP, go to the control panel and open the system properties. Go to the 'Advanced' tab and click 'Settings' under the Performance section. Click 'Advanced' again and then click the 'Change' button. Select the button that says 'Custom Size' and put something like 2048 in both boxes, then click Set and okay your way out. Reboot your computer and the problem should be fixed.
*Edit
The above two answers are completely wrong.

Upgrading the RAM is fine and will help, but if the asker is using Windows XP, XP uses the page file differently from other operating systems - therefore, the problem may not necessarily be related to the amount of physical RAM. The asker simply needs to increase the size of the page file to stop the error - if there is enough hard drive space left. Though, if there weren't, she would also be getting an error about available space.
Most likely, someone was trying to tweak the system and disabled the page file completely. This is not smart and not recommended in any case. Though, you can tweak the registry to keep the kernel in RAM instead of swapping it to the page file, this will increase performance.

I do get that "Your system is low on virtual memory" message at times. When that happens, it could be that you are running too many programs or applications at one time. Just like our brain, whereby when it is overload our brain memory with too much information to process, we will juz collapse and give up. Your computer is the same. When your virtual memory is used up, your computer will either be very slow or will not respond.
What I usually do when that happens is I will hit the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" keys. When the task manager window pops up, click on 'Processes' and you'll see the list of programs/applications that are running. What you can do is to end the programs/applications that are taking up too much memory usage. You can end it by selecting the program and right click to select 'End Process'. Warning though, because you're not a computer expert, it would be wise to only End the programs that comes under your username and not those under "SYSTEM" or any other name.

Okay, well like that guy said that you need to re-install Windows. You don't have to. When it says low on virtual memory it means that you are very low on your memory. So, what you need to do is call Dell and ask them what type of memory your computer will take. Dell is very specific about the hardware they use to make their computers.
