My husband cut wood for a living for several years when he was younger. A Rick: 4 ft tall - 4 ft wide - 8 ft long. A Cord: 4ft tall - 4 ft wide - 16 ft long. (That's how it is in South Arkansas)

A true cord of wood (which is a legal measurement) is always 128 cubic feet, or more simply 4 ft X 4 ft X 8 ft stacked. A rick is half that measure or 2 ft X 4 ft x 8 ft. Face cords (4 ft high by 8 ft long) can be anything from 1/2 to 1/3 of a cord in true measurement, but is dependent on the length of the wood stacked, usually averaging 16" in length which would only yield about 1/3 of an actual cord of wood.

A cord of wood is 128 cubic feet. If anyone tries to sell anything less (ie. a face cord) they are breaking the law. There is no such legal thing as a face cord. If there was I would order all my wood in 8 foot lengths and ask for a face cord.

a cord is 4' by 4' by 8 ', however, if you are buying wood from someone, they may be selling you a "face cord" which is 4' high by 8' long by whatever the length of the logs.
