Well now, that changes the dynamic a bit doesn't it. Hmmmm, well sadly you basically have only a few choices:
1. Tell him how you feel.
2. Ask him outright if he's gay or gay-curious
3. Have a discussion about gay issues or ask a gay themed question and see how he reacts.

Spend more time with him. He'll talk to you more and get more comfortable. I always think the best way is to come right out and ask but i know it can get awkward sometimes so I think second most respectful way is to genuinely spend more time with him. You will also find out more about him and you might decide in the end if he's right or not right for you.

Don't ask him. Just let nature take its course. If he was a girl you wouldn't ask what her sex was. If there are feelings there they will surface. Don't use a friend to face the issue of your curiosity. That isn't what friends are for. Though I know several will disagree with that. Just be his friend if he needs you.

suggest going to a gay bar, just give the name of it and don't say that it is a gay bar, and have some drinks, if he acts uncomfortable, then you know that he is straight but if he looks at some guys then you know that he is gay.
