As politicians are different, this question can be answered in several ways!

Not ALL politicians are corrupt. The local granny who joins the village council to campaign for a crossing in front of a school or against hospital closures isn't corrupt and isn't likely to become so. I also wouldn't call Nelson Mandela or Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma corrupt.

Corruption rises with the amount of power held.

Some politicians (Stalin, Sen. Joseph McCarthy) are just power-hungry freaks with no concern about due process, fairness or respecting the rules. They were probably born rotten.

Some politicians are idealistic when they first start, but they soon learn they can't buck the system, and the only way to get ANYTHING done is to work with the system, at least to some extent. Everyone does it, that's just how the system works!

Some politicians become corrupt when they no longer have an immediate boss to watch over them.

Some politicians become corrupt when they've feel the need to protect the position they've got to from real or perceived threats (Nixon).

Some politicians become corrupt the first time an opportunity presents itself to them that they can personally benefit (and no one would have to find out).

Some politicians become corrupt if they have something to cover up, and feel that the small chance of getting caught out is worth it compared to the truth becoming known.

They may also become corrupt when they start to value an attainable or already-attained important position and all that comes with it, more so than the fact that they are servants of the public.

At the time that they first attend an expenses paid trip on behalf of their trade union, local council, House of Commons, etc. The moment they accept a gift, a directorship or preference due to their political clout. In short some people are born corrupt it just takes time for it to show.

Sorry to say that all politicians without exception are corrupted by their desire for power over the people. The corruption sets in on the very first day they are elected to power. They become consumed by a lust for power, so much so in fact, that they seldom pay any attention at all to what their constituents ask of them. In truth, all politicians, no matter what their politics, are on the slippery slope to hell.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Most of them are born to it - they are naturally corrupt.
