its only been in the last couple of weeks he has been digging in the same spot in the back yard. Each morning we have looked out our kitchen window to see that same spot of dirt dug up, even though the day before we filled the hole up and patted it out flat. We have tried telling him off, we have tried ignoring him, we have tried telling the hole off, we have tried giving him more attention and all sorts of doggy toys to entertain him, we have tried sprinkling pepper in the spot that he likes to dig, we even put a steel step over the spot (and somehow he managed to climb under it and dig another hole)... None of those things have really detered him from doing it. I love my dog but am out of ideas!

um 1st off..DUH!! he's bored..he needs exercise..and tons of it..JRT's are not easy dogs..they need high discipline and high activity..letting him out in the back yard isnt' gonna cut it..he needs to run at least a few times a day..i know it sounds crazy but its true..JRT's can be very hard dogs if you don't give them the training they deperately need..get a treadmill and have him run on it...or run with him..take him for long walks...but he needs the exercise otherwise you are SOL...sorry..but its the hard truth

My 8 month old Aussie does the same thing. We put her own stool in the fresh hole, then fill it in, then put a piece or 2 on the top of fresh soil. Dogs generally will not dig where they poop. Two important tips though, it has to be your dog's poop and don't EVER let your dog see you gardening or filling this hole back in! If you see him doing it you must firmly tell him 'no' while in the act so that he knows what he's done bad.

Also, dogs just need a place to dig, whether it be burying bones or for fun. I am trying to condition my dog to only dig in sand. We have put a sand box in the back yard and praise her when we see her digging in this spot. Trust me dogs just want your approval, he'll eventually get the picture, it just takes time. Burying treats in the okay spot is another good way to get them to dig there.
I also take her to the park with the kids and let her dig in the sand there.

Also, just alot of patience!

Don't leave him unsupervised. And if he does it in front of you put a leash on him and give a stern correction and tell him in a stern voice "No Digging". If he's across the yard doing get a soda can fill it with about 15 pennies and throw it so it lands next to him. This will startle him and he will most likely stop and run away from the hole he's digging. If your persistent in doing this he will eventually stop. The reason he's digging is because he's bored and needs more exercise to stimulate him and he will less likely be digging holes.

It's just doggie nature to dig. He'll probably slow down if he gets more exercise. Take him to the dog park!

If he keeps digging in one place, put some of his poop there. Dogs won't dig in a hole where there poop is. Crazy sounding I know. It worked for my lab who loved to dig.

JRT's were bred to go down rabbit holes,so he's doing what what he was bred for. My suggestion is that Jacks love people so get out there and play with him.Tennis balls work great!

Do what I did, fence off your lawn. Make sure its sturdy wire netting so the little bugger can see canaan but cannot enter. Makes the expense worthwhile to see you've outsmarted a dog.
