just curious since it's been taking a LONG TIME to make cars to run on alternative fuels

Yes, and look out for those black helicopters hovering over your house. They cannot allow you to live now that you know their secret.

You have to look at the profits as a percentage of the gross. Most businessmen would not invest their money in an enterprise that would not give at least a 15-20% return on investment. If you look at the "big oil" companies in that light, they are a bad investment. The best only did 10% in 2005. 2006 will likely be less. Microsoft did 35%. WOW, we need to put limits on "big software", don't we? Target runs over 20% consistently. We should rein them in, too.

If you had spent a little more time paying attention in school, I wouldn't have to explain this to you.

No, I don't, but they must like gas guzzlers, considering supply and demand. They wouldn't sell many cars without gas or diesel.
The American govt. would be very unhappy to find any cooperation to make cars use more fuel than they now do, the trend is in the other way.

I don't think they do, at least not directly. Somewhat they belong together, one cannot be without the other. I think most of the profits go to the shareholders and employees and the rest is bribe.
