It's a variation in the amount of melanin producing cells in skin. If a particular group of people lives in an area with a great deal of sunlight, the people will be darker. Their bodies make more melanin to protect their skin and keep their Vitamin D levels under better control. In areas where there isn't as much sunlight, the skin will be lighter because less protection is needed and Vitamin D harder to get because of the lack of light.
My ancestors were from Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina( 36 degrees latitude give or take) --high altitudes, sunny in the summer but very dry and damp in the winter. We evolved a light olive tone that darkens easily when it has to as a result. Just an adaptation, that's all ;)

diffrent colors come from diffrent genetic traves... ... peopel look diffrent with diffrent skin color ... because of the envirioment they live in... they need to adapt to their surrounding .. you see darker people as you go to hotter climates . coz teh body produces a chemical called milamine (misspelled) to adjust to the hot sunrays. and so on.....

different amounts of melanin in the skin because the lived in different places in the world. some places are very hot with strong sun. people whose ancestors evolved there will have very dark skin. people whose ancestors are from the north where there was not much, not strong sun will have light skin.
It was an adaptation to differing amounts of sunlight. sunlight contains vitamin d.

People whose ancestors are from northern areas of the world, like Sweden have light skin so they can absorb more sunlight. People whose ancestors are from southern areas of the world, like Africa have darker skin to protect them from the powerful suns rays near the equator.

He was asking why we are, not the science behind the skin pigments for god sakes.
Other than that, I have no clue. Maybe God designed us that way if you believe in that sort of thing? Maybe we adapted for our different environments? What do you think? Your guess is as good as anyone's.
Ask him up there and when he replies, let me know ;) ^^^
